A lot of people suffer from depression, and their numbers are growing day by day. With the busy city life bustling over them, it is hard to find time and places where they could unwind and relax. Most if not all, resort to modern medicine, which could instantly take them to a phase of serenity. These western drugs, are most of time effective; however, it does come with a heavy price tag.

On the other hand, we do have these so-called alternative medicines. These herbs for depression, are now gaining popularity simply because these are made using organic materials, cheap and effective. Here are some insights on a few of these remedies.

St. John’s Wort – I know, it sound disgusting doesn’t it? But don’t worry; its name doesn’t do justice to it. It is actually a yellow flowering plant, native to North America, Europe, Turkey, Russia, and China. One active compound of this herb, hypericin, is said to improve anxiety and depression.

Kava Kava – this plant found in the Polynesian islands, is said to benefit people who suffer from stress, depression and anxiety when ingested. This herb for depression, is now available in different forms like in syrup, extracts, powdered and even tablet form.

Valerian Root –this herb was used for headaches and sleep problems since Roman times. People who take this herb say it helps them overcome insomnia, which is a common problem for patients of depression.

A few scientific studies were made with regards to these natural herbs for depression and found evidence that these actually work. These affordable remedies won’t be going away for a long time. In reality, some had been here longer than us. We just didn’t see it. Makes you wonder… 30 years from now, imagine what discoveries are in stored for us.
